2205This is Savo Heleta, who wrote Not My Turn To Die, a book about his time growing up in Bosnia during the Balkans conflict.
Of his SOTM, he said: The person Id like to quote, his name is Daniel Whalen. Hes an American businessman but came from a difficult upbringing, being poor and having other people helping him through university.
At some point in his life he decided to give back to other people. I ended up being one of those people in Bosnia, and was part of a programme funded by Mr Whalen and his foundation.
"At one point in 2002 I was asked by him if there was anything I wanted to do with my life. I said, if I could, Id like to study in Europe or the US, because I couldnt afford it. He said Pick a country, pick a school and I will fund your undergraduate education.
It was a shock that somebody would do something like that. I started asking questions I said that if I accepted this, how could I repay him for all this. He replied that he wanted to help, it wasnt a loan and that he didnt want anything in return. He went on to tell me this. Its what should guide people in life, because its how were supposed to be living.
Taken at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa on the SOTM World Tour.
