2010When I passed my driving test my mums mum actually picked me up from the driving centre. Ive always been really close to my gran. I was a lot more like her than I was ever like either of my parents. She died recently. I miss her a lot. She said to me this piece of advice.
She reminded me of it years later and reminded me that its a much wider phrase than perhaps I originally thought. Years later, when Id had a breakup of a relationship, I was on the phone to her, consoling myself with her wisdom and perpetual belief that tea will fix everything.
"She asked if I remembered this quote and explained how its a much broader thing and you can go about your life letting other people dictate the way you go, letting the person behind you drive your car, drive your life. And it struck me thats a really lovely way of looking at it.
Taken in Hoxton, London at a drinks meetup organised by our charming subject, Amanda Jones, for her Irreverent Dance group.
